VEHICLE RESTRAINT SYSTEMS

We are able to offer fully qualified installation for the following vehicle restraint systems to National Highways Sector Scheme 2B

Non-Proprietary Systems

  • Single-Sided Open Box Beam.

  • Double-Sided Open Box Beam.

  • Single-Sided Tensioned Corrugated Beam.

  • Double-Sided Tensioned Corrugated Beam.

  • Double Rail Open Box Beam.

  • Rectangular Hollow Section Beam.

Most of these systems are gradually being phased out and replaced by less expensive proprietary systems. However, they are still available and our workforce is trained in their installation.

Proprietary Systems

This list of proprietary systems, which is not exhaustive, is continually being updated as manufacturers strive to develop better and/or more economical systems. They all comply with EN1317, which is the latest standard for Road Restraint Systems that came into force in April 2005. NFF works closely with manufacturers and supply feedback to assist them in this process.

Normal containment barrier (N2) is designed to contain average sized cars and is used on all classifications of roads, including motorways. Read more about our N2 Barriers

Containment Barriers

Normal containment barrier (N2) is designed to contain average sized cars and is used on all classifications of roads, including motorways. Read more about our N2 Barriers

High containment barrier (H1 and H2) is designed to contain larger commercial vehicles and coaches and is used to protect higher risk areas such as bridge supports and gantries. Read more about our H1 and H2 Barriers

Working Widths for Barriers.

EN1317 stipulates different Working Widths for barriers. The Working Width is the distance from the traffic face of the barrier to the hazard that the barrier is protecting. There are eight different Working Width classes; W1 through to W8.

All Systems are impact tested and given a Containment level and Working Width classification e.g. N2W2, H1W4.

End Terminals

End terminals are also tested but are given a different rating. These are P1 through to P4, which are the performance classes and a D rating which relates to displacement zones e.g. P4 D1.1.

Crash Cushions

Crash Cushions are often used to protect motorists from hazards such as concrete abutments. They also have different ratings; Redirective or Non-Redirective, Performance Level (Speed Rating), Redirection Zone Classes (Z1 to Z4) and Displacement Zone Class (D1 to D8). For example, a specification might read “Redirective 110kph Z1 D1”.

Our estimators are always available to give design assistance and provide a better understanding of the requirements and workings of EN 1317.
